Franciscans International submits Report on
Torture in Aceh and West Papua to the Committee Against Torture

Franciscans International jointly submitted a Shadow Torture Report on Patterns of Torture in Aceh and Papua 1998-2007 to the Committee Against Torture, in view of the upcoming review of Indonesia, which will take place from the 5th May-8th May 2008.

The report was possible thanks to the efforts of the following organizations: The Office for Justice and Peace (SKP) of the Catholic Diocese of Jayapura, the Synod of the Christian Evangelical Church of Papua (GKI-Papua), Imparsial, Progressio Timor Leste and Franciscans International.

This report aims to show the pattern of torture used in Aceh and Papua--areas which have been deemed or are currently considered conflict zones by the government. An annex on Timor Leste documents cases of torture during Indonesian occupation between 1975-1999.

Report on West Papua for the
Universal Periodic Review of Indonesia in April 2008

Franciscans International, which has General Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), submitted a report for the Universal periodic Review of the Republic of Indonesia, according to UN Human Rights Council Resolution 5/1 of 18 June 2007. It was co-written by Franciscans International and Justitia et Pax Netherlands, in cooperation with the Office for Justice and Peace of the Catholic Diocese of Jayapura and the Evangelical Church in Papua, and is a report on the situation of civil and political rights in West Papua, Indonesia.

The Universal Periodic Review is a process which was adopted by the Human Rights Council in 2006 to review the human rights record and compliance of all 192 Member States of the United Nations, from 2008-2011. The Republic of Indonesia will be reviewed in April 2008.
