FI urges more countries to ratify the Convention
on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members
of their Families.
Franciscans International welcomes the fact that on 10 December
2002, the human rights day, the International Convention on the
Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their
Families (1990) entered into force with the 20th ratification of
this instrument by Timor Leste.
FI will, however, continue to use the Commission as a key platform
to encourage more countries to ratify the Convention. In particular,
we will appeal to countries of destination of migrant workers to
sign and ratify this instrument. FI will also call on governments:
to review and modify policies that may compel people to irregular
and vulnerable labour migration, including repressive and /
or discriminatory nationality, property, immigration, emigration
and migrant labour laws;
to examine ways of increasing opportunities for legal, gainful
and unexploitative labour migration through regulatory and supervisory
mechanisms to protect the rights of migrant workers;
to continue to support the mandate of the Special Rapporteur
on the Rights of Migrants.
New Horizons Franciscans International inaugurates its third office in Bangkok, Thailand. The office will serve the needs of the Franciscan Family working at the grassroots in the Asia-Pacific.
