Franciscans Commemorate the UN International Day of Peace

Here is a listing of some of the International Day of Peace celebrations that Franciscans planned in 2003.

Bosnia
Sarajevo
The International Multireligious and Intercultural Center (IMIC) hosted an IDP celebration with over 20,000 participants. The IMIC was started by a Franciscan, a Muslim and an Orthodox Christian to bring peace to this war-torn community.

Italy
Rieti /Fontecolombo - Rieti
"Il Portico di Salomone" Franciscan Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order Luzzi Giampiero e Fagiani Cinzia
The Franciscan fraternity of Fontecolombo, in the province of Riety, Italy, joins on September 21st at 5.00 p.m. to celebrate the International Day of Peace Vigil, established in 2001 by the United Nations, in communion of prayer with the entire international community. The one-hour vigil will take place in the Sanctuary of Fontecolombo where in 1223 St. Francis, under the inspiration of the Lord, dictated the Rule of the Friars Minor, later approved in the same year by the Pope Onorio III. Among the vigilers there will be the Friars Minor living in the sanctuary, the brothers and sisters of Il Portico di Salomone franciscan Fraternity of the Secular Franciscan Order, under the guide of the Regional SFO Assistant P.Domenico Lassandro, and any believer. The vigil, at which about 20-30 believers are expected to participate, will be a meditated Adoration with prayer, music, speech readings.

Sisters of St. Francis
The Clinton Franciscans celebrated IDP with a 24 hour prayer vigil and heard a presentation from a peace activist who had been in Iraq meeting with families affected by the war.

Wilmington, NC
St. Stanislaus Fraternity, Secular Franciscan Order
Prayer service and candlelight procession. Peace prayers in native language will be offered by victims of violence, war, discrimination, etc.

St. Francis Village, Crowley TX
St. Clare Fraternity & St. Francis Village Chapel Community
24-hour vigil in our place of worship by group members of our community.

West Wales, UK
A group of local people of different faiths and denominations will express its desire for peace and justice in the world through music and reflections at St. Davids Cathedral at 3:00 pm. The event is hosted by West Wales Franciscans T.O.
