We bring Franciscans from the field to the UN's highest global forum
for setting worldwide human rights standards. Our brothers and sisters
offer reliable, first-hand testimony on human rights in their countries,
lending credibility and respect to FI's advocacy in the international
community. At the CHR and at the subsequent UN Sub-Commission on the Promotion
and Protection of Human Rights (Geneva, annually, August) we advocate
on many country and thematic issues, including religious freedom, right
to development, land reform, and indigenous and minority rights. Past
FI interventions have included: support for a moratorium on the death
penalty, condemnation of religious intolerance in Pakistan, protection
of trafficked women and children in Togo, and advocacy for indigenous
peoples in India and Mexico.
For a collection of our official texts of interventions at the Human
Rights Office of the United Nations in Geneva at the 2002 UN Commission
on Human Rights, look below. Past statements are also available for: 2001,
2000, 1999,
1998, 1997.
