Eight promises were made to every person in the world at the turn of the Millennium by 187 countries, Member States of the United Nations. The countries promised: to halve the number of people living on less than a dollar a day, to ensure primary education for all boys and girls, to promote gender equality, to reduce child and maternal mortality, to provide universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS, to ensure environmental sustainability, and to develop an international, rule-based financial system - all by 2015!

He called for States to work in an open and transparent manner as they seek to produce a meaningful outcome document for the conference taking place in Rio de Janeiro in 2012 to review progress since the historic UN "Rio Summit" environment conference held there nearly 20 years ago. The focus of "Rio+20" will be on a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication.

New Yorkers heard from the expert, Robert K. Musil, Ph.D, MPH, LHD talk about 'Fighting for Our Environment'.  He raised the concern that while the scientific reports on climate change are clear, what is less known is that the disruptions of our global climate system are disproportionately affecting people in the developing world. We need to take action.
