He called for States to work in an open and transparent manner as they seek to produce a meaningful outcome document for the conference taking place in Rio de Janeiro in 2012 to review progress since the historic UN "Rio Summit" environment conference held there nearly 20 years ago. The focus of "Rio+20" will be on a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication.

New Yorkers heard from the expert, Robert K. Musil, Ph.D, MPH, LHD talk about 'Fighting for Our Environment'.  He raised the concern that while the scientific reports on climate change are clear, what is less known is that the disruptions of our global climate system are disproportionately affecting people in the developing world. We need to take action.

To raise awareness of the problem of street children in Sweden, Ms. Ingrid Scholer, Svenska Franciskushjälpen (SF) (Franciscan Helpers), joined Franciscans International in Geneva to lobby diplomats and missions prior to the country’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on 7 May.

"There is still hope" to reverse the negative impacts of global warming, so assured Dr. Jan Dash at the conclusion of his comprehensive presentation on "Follow-Up to Copenhagen" during FI's first Annual Program in Preparation for the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-18), earlier in May in New York. Professor Dash stressed that global warming is a long-term trend that began in the 1880s, and that human activity is a significant contributing factor.

In early May, the countries of Kenza, Kiribati and Sweden each underwent their first Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the United Nation's Human Rights Council in Geneva. Franciscans International attended the sessions to hear their recommendations raised in different member states`reports.
