November 19, the world celebrates the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child
On the 20 November 2009 the international community will observe the 20th Anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) by the United Nations General Assembly. In 1989, the Convention on the Rights of the Child became the first legally binding international convention to affirm human rights for all children. As a binding treaty of international law, it codifies principles that Member States of the UN agreed to be universal – for all children, in all countries and cultures, at all times. The treaty spells out the basic human rights that children everywhere have: the right to survival; the right to develop to the fullest; the right to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life.
